Caring for your mat

A little regular attention between prayers keeps the mat comfortable and looking new for years.

The Sujuud mat is built for daily use, so its care is meant to be quick and unfussy — a little regular attention between prayers keeps it comfortable and looking new for years. This guide covers everyday care, spills, deeper cleaning, drying, storage, and keeping the mat out in a room.

Everyday care, between prayers

A quick shake-out and a light brush or vacuum on a low, no-beater setting is enough to keep the Sujuud mat fresh for daily prayer. Doing this every few days, or whenever the mat looks like it needs it, prevents dust and everyday debris from working into the surface.

  1. Shake the mat out over a doorway or balcony to release loose dust
  2. Brush the surface gently in one direction, or vacuum on a low setting without a beater bar
  3. Let the mat air out for a few minutes before folding or rolling it away, if it isn't staying out

Spot-cleaning spills

Spills on the Sujuud mat are best treated immediately, before they have a chance to sink into the cushioned core. Blotting rather than rubbing keeps a spill from spreading and protects the surface pile.

  1. Blot the spill right away with a clean, dry cloth — never rub, which can push liquid deeper and fray the surface
  2. Dampen a fresh cloth with cool water and a small amount of mild, unscented soap
  3. Dab the affected area gently, working from the outside in
  4. Blot again with a dry cloth to lift excess moisture, then let the spot air dry flat before using the mat again

Deeper cleaning

For a fuller clean, hand-wash the surface of the Sujuud mat rather than submerging or machine-washing it. Prayer mats with a cushioned core hold water, and a full soak or a wash cycle can trap moisture inside where it won't dry properly and may damage the padding.

  1. Use a soft cloth or sponge dampened with cool water and a mild, unscented soap
  2. Work in gentle, small circular motions across the surface, section by section
  3. Wipe away soap residue with a clean, water-dampened cloth
  4. Avoid soaking the mat, submerging it, or running it through a washing machine

What to avoid

A few common laundry habits will damage the Sujuud mat rather than clean it, because its cushioned core behaves differently from a flat woven textile. Treating it like a yoga mat, rather than a piece of clothing or a thin rug, is the simplest rule of thumb.

  1. No machine washing — the agitation and prolonged soaking can break down the cushioned core
  2. No bleach or harsh chemical cleaners — they can strip color and weaken the surface fibers
  3. No tumble drying — heat and tumbling can warp or crack a cushioned core
  4. No wringing or twisting to remove water — this stresses the core and can cause it to lose its shape

Drying

The Sujuud mat should always dry flat, out of direct sunlight and away from direct heat sources like radiators or heaters. Drying flat keeps the mat from developing permanent creases, and avoiding direct heat protects both the surface color and the cushioned core underneath.

  1. Lay the mat flat on a clean, dry, well-ventilated surface
  2. Keep it out of direct sunlight and away from radiators, heaters, or other direct heat
  3. Let it dry fully before rolling, folding, or praying on it again — a cushioned core can hold moisture longer than the surface appears to

Rolling vs. folding

Rolling the Sujuud mat, rather than folding it, is the better habit for day-to-day handling. A fold puts a sharp crease across the pile and the cushioned core at a single line, and repeated folding in the same spot can wear that line down faster than the rest of the mat. Rolling spreads the same handling across a gentle curve instead.

  1. Roll the mat loosely, starting from one short end
  2. Avoid rolling it too tightly, which can compress the cushioned core over time
  3. If the mat has been folded for shipping, let it lie flat for a day before its first use so the crease can relax

Storing the mat

When the Sujuud mat isn't being left out, store it rolled in a cool, dry place out of direct sunlight. Consistent storage conditions protect both the color and the cushioning far more than any single cleaning step does.

  1. Store the mat rolled, not folded, to protect the pile and the cushioned core
  2. Choose a cool, dry spot out of direct sunlight — a closet shelf or under a bed works well
  3. Make sure the mat is fully dry before storing it, to avoid trapping moisture

Leaving it out in a room

The Sujuud mat is designed to be left out in a room between prayers, not tucked away out of sight, so day-to-day life in the room is part of its care too. A few simple habits keep it looking its best while it stays on display.

  1. Keep it out of prolonged direct sunlight where possible, since extended UV exposure can fade any textile over time
  2. Keep pets off the mat when it isn't in use, and brush off pet hair regularly if pets are in the home
  3. In high-traffic spots, shake it out and brush it a little more often than the everyday routine above suggests
